Maddie's Story: What Started Advanced Scope

As I write this, I’m approaching two years as the founder and owner of Advanced Scope, a recruitment firm I dreamed of for years but never had the means or courage to launch until November 2022. It has not been rainbows and butterflies and there is actually a reason behind my absolute mad decision to leave a comfortable corporate job to start my own business. This is Maddie's story:

In 2022, I was working at a remote cybersecurity startup, thriving in a role that many would envy—a six-figure salary, great work-life balance, and smart, passionate colleagues. It was a place of comfort, with perks like ping pong tables and unlimited paid time off. But something inside me was never satisfied. I’ve always felt a restlessness, a desire to achieve more and push myself beyond the comfort zone. When the company started laying people off while still hiring, I felt increasingly uneasy. I realized I was contributing to a cycle that didn’t align with my values, selling a dream that didn’t match reality. It didn’t sit right with me. So, I made a bold decision: I quit.

I walked away from a fat paycheck and stability. It was scary but I had the best support system there for me. My family and my (now) husband, Dustin. He told me that he would bet on me even if my horse came in last place. I'm glad he did, because he loaned me his confidence when I needed it most.

It shocked everyone, but I felt a calling to start my own business and do recruitment the right way: honest with a focus on long-term partnerships. I wanted to specialize in healthcare, an industry close to my heart, not just because of my degree in health studies but also due to my personal experiences. Not to get all sappy on you but it's my reality.

Growing up, I struggled with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). My childhood was far from carefree during this time as it was hard for me to concentrate at school, be social, or feel "normal". I spent countless hours in a therapist's office, learning to manage my symptoms through exposure therapy. My hands would often be raw and bleeding from compulsive washing, and obsessive thoughts consumed me daily. It was a challenging period, but my therapist taught me how to rewire my brain and find me again. The hardest yet best decision was not turning to medication. I did it 100% mentally with the help of my therapist and my #1 cheerleade - my mom! I learned to confront my fears, not avoid them. It was the healthcare professionals who helped me reclaim my childhood. This experience gave me a deep appreciation for the impact of compassionate, dedicated providers.

During the OCD era
My biggest cheerleader, my mom!

Later, as a young adult, I had dropped nearly 80 pounds on a ketogenic diet and spin class. Then, I fainted and was rushed to the ER one evening. I was defeated. I had worked so hard to be healthy and yet I was still far from achieving it. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and follow up testing revealed it was due to an auto-immune condition: Hashimotos. I remember the day I was told I’d need to be on medication for the rest of my life. The doctor handed me a prescription and told me to return in six months, offering no guidance on lifestyle changes or holistic options. Feeling lost and unheard, I decided to take control of my health journey. I found an endocrinologist nurse practitioner who took a more holistic approach, guiding me through dietary changes and regular monitoring of my blood work. Five years later, thanks to a Mediterranean based diet and this NP’s support, my wellness has significantly improved. These personal experiences made it clear that my passion was best suited for healthcare—a field where I could help connect patients with the kind of dedicated professionals who had made such a difference in my own life.

Starting Advanced Scope was no easy feat. The first two years were tough. I was up against billion-dollar companies that had dominated the market for decades (AMN, Jackson, Aya), and I was dealing with clients who had been burned by those players and had lost trust in recruiters. I was working long hours, averaging 80-hour workweeks, and never taking a holiday without my laptop, even on my honeymoon. It was exhausting, but I knew it was worth every second because I was committed to making a genuine impact. I wasn’t just placing candidates; I was helping practices serve their communities better and aligning with my core values as a Christian.

Donut delivery to clients!

At Advanced Scope, we prioritize stewardship, humility, compassion, curiosity, resilience, and zeal. These values guide everything we do. I’m not just a resume slinger or a seat warmer; I’m a long-term talent partner who cares deeply about the people I place and the practices I serve. I want to help another little 10 year old girl overcome OCD and GAD, or another patient find a provider who looks beyond the surface and considers the whole person, just as I experienced.

If you’re looking to work with a recruiter who truly cares, let’s connect. Even if it’s for a rainy day. I'd love to hear your story.

Advanced Scope offers affordable, permanent healthcare recruitment solutions for private practices with fewer than 500 employees. Let’s build something meaningful together.
